Endodontic
procedures deal with problems related to the pulp tissues
(nerve and
blood supply) of teeth.
Symptoms that develop
when these tissues reach an unhealthy
state are prolonged sensitivity to cold
or hot, intermittent or constant pain,
tenderness to biting pressure
and swelling. Endodontic procedures (
Root Canals ) allow many teeth to be saved
that would otherwise be lost.
The
only alternative when problems of this type develop is extraction
of the tooth. Endodontic procedures have the reputation of being
painful. My track record with this procedure does not demonstrate
this to be the case. With
proper explanation and understanding
of what to expect, along with good anesthesia,
endodontic procedures should be comfortable and relatively
low on the stress meter.
Anesthetized
tooth is prepared to allow access to pulp chamber.
Length
of each canal is determined.
Canals
are widened and cleaned.
Canals
are filled.
Tooth
may require protection and reinforcement with a (post and) crown.
Endodontics
has undergone much change in the last few years. With the availability
of new materials (nickel titanium files) new concepts have opened
up for more rapid treatment completion.
